The Third Reich
Germany and the rise of Nazism 1919-1933...
A time of turmoil
Germany’s defeat in WWI (1914 – 1918) was followed by a period of national disillusionment and bitterness arising out of the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which led to inflation, mass unemployment and social and political unrest.
One of the new political parties to benefit from the turmoil was the Nazi Party led by Adolf Hitler. Hitler represented the strong leadership Germans hoped would lead them out of despair. Hitler was appointed Chancellor of the German nation in January, 1933 and within a few months Germany was under his total control.
