Welcome to the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC). Established in January 2008, the
JHGC is dedicated to Holocaust and genocide education and memory. The JHGC works widely in the field of Holocaust, human rights and genocide education, under the Directorship of Tali Nates, who apart from her wealth of experience in these fields in South Africa, has conducted work in Rwanda, Israel, Canada and the United States.
In 2007, the South African Department of Education implemented a new National Curriculum, which contains a strong human rights focus. The HSS and History curricula for Grades 9 and 11 include a study of the Holocaust. This has greatly escalated the demand for Holocaust education programmes and resources.
The development of a Holocaust and genocide centre in Johannesburg became a matter of urgency.

It is envisioned that the new Centre will be a place of learning, where young and old, from all walks of life, come together to learn from the histories of the Holocaust and the genocide in Rwanda. In this space people will gather to gain knowledge, dialogue, share their stories, experience thought-provoking films, exhibitions, lectures and attend interesting book launches.
