27 January
In 2005 the UN General Assembly designated the 27 January as the annual
International Day of Commemoration to honour the victims of the Holocaust.

This day marks the liberation of Auschwitz.

The Johannesburg Holocaust Centre together with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC),
Pretoria, and other partners hold annual commemoration events in Gauteng.

27 January 2010

The UN central theme for 2010, Legacy of Survival, emphasizes the importance of survivor testimony for succeeding generations.
The JHGC were involved in two events - one in Johannesburg and the other in Pretoria.
A memorable evening was held in partnership with the Apartheid Museum, Anne Frank House and UNIC, paying tribute to the children of the Holocaust - those that survived and those that didn't.

Irene Klass, a child survivor from Poland gave her testimony from the Warsaw Ghetto and a message for remembrance and education for the future.

Panels from the Anne Frank - A History for Today exhibition were displayed and a film, The short life of Anne Frank was introduced by guest speaker , Aaron Peterer, Project Manager for Southern Africa, of the Anne Frank House, Amsterdam. Aaron shared the amazing work being done by the Anne Frank House internationally as well as the success of the acclaimed exhibition currently travelling around schools in Soweto under the guidance of Mr Kumresh Chetty.

In, Pretoria, the UNISA Primedia Holocaust and Genocide unit, together with UNIC, The Anne Frank House and the JHGC, explored the legacy of survivor testimony using the 'Anne Frank - A history for today' exhibition with learners and educators from various schools.

The United Nations International Day of Commemoration to honor the victims of the Holocaust
The Johannesburg Holocaust Centre formed part of the organising body for a special evening held at the Apartheid Museum in commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
